The Untouchables Season 3 Episode 18

The Untouchables (1959): March 3, 1932. It's the great train robbery, on the southbound express headed for Chicago. The Stryker brothers steal mail sacks containing 750 grand in payroll money. During the robbery, a baggage man and Lippy Carson (an associate of the Stryker brothers, who had worked as a mail clerk) are killed, and thrown from the speeding train. Since mail robbery is a federal offense, Eliot Ness and his Untouchables are called in. Morton Stryker is the eldest, and leader of the 4 brothers; then there's Alvin and Nate, and Benny Stryker, the youngest. Benny Stryker is an arsonist (former student of Mr. Jaeger), and their file keeper. When the 4 brothers were released from Leavenworth, Al Capone gave them permission to rebuild their empire-- if they had the cash to pay his tab. They are all going through the stolen money. Benny Stryker finds some registered mail; they tell him to keep the dough and burn the rest. They can't even keep the checks, even one letter traced back to them would prove they were on the train, and they'd all get the chair. But Benny's a bit slow; when he finds a letter with the return address of the White House, a letter from the president himself, he can't burn it, and puts it in the files. Later, Ness and his men show up with a search warrant, and impound the books and files. Since it will take days to go through the many boxes of records, they store them in a locked room in the basement of the Federal Building. Nitti's man Rescoe meets with the Strykers, and tells them once they pay the 750 grand to Capone's mob, they'll be rolling in less than a month. But when Benny tells his brothers that the letter from the president is in the files that Ness snatched, Benny's in big trouble. He says he'll burn the files; they tell him to get Mr. Jaeger to do it, he's the best matcher in the business. Morton Stryker makes his point, "No mistakes, Benny-- torch the files, or we torch you." The Stryker brothers are ruthless; railroad station agent Avery had tipped them off about the payroll shipment, and the Strykers paid him off in full-- with 2 slugs in the pump. Meanwhile, Benny goes to elderly Mr. Jaeger: now he's retired from crime, and is a respectable businessman who runs his own clock repair shop; in fact, he even services the city's Clock Tower next door. Benny wants him to come out of retirement to pull off his most daring job: torch the basement of the Federal Building-- right under Ness' nose. Later, Morton Stryker promises Jaeger 5 grand now, 20 more when the job is done. That night, while Ness, Rossi, Lee Hobson and Youngfellow are having a late dinner at the Cafe next door, Jaeger torches the evidence. Frankie Rescoe is impressed with how the Strykers got out of a tight jam; he sets them up with a nightclub, and promises them 20 more. Since the Feds have the serial numbers of the stolen bills, the 750 grand is too hot to spend right now; Rescoe extends the Strykers credit on the frozen collateral. Meanwhile, Ness can't prove Jaeger did the torch job, but he tells Jaeger about what happened to Avery: rubbing someone out is the Stryker brothers' usual way of paying off someone who did a job for them; Jaeger has reason to worry. When Jaeger wants to collect the rest of his money, Morton Stryker is too cheap to pay him; besides the money is hot. Since Jaeger was stiffed out of his 20 g's, he goes to the Strykers' hideout and helps himself to the loot. When they chase him, Jaeger phones Ness; Jaeger locks himself in the Clock Tower. Jaeger goes up the spiral staircase to the top of the Clock Tower, and rings all the bells. The Stryker brothers break in and go after him. At the top of the stairs, Jaeger sprays a fire extinguisher into Nate Stryker's face; he falls to his doom. Ness and his men show up. In the shootout, Lee Hobson shoots Morton Stryker; Eliot Ness shoots Alvin Stryker. Timid Benny Stryker wisely surrenders. Mr. Jaeger surrenders to Ness, too; Jaeger hands him the 20 grand, which is now evidence of the stolen mail money. As Ness leads him away, the Clock Tower strikes 11:15 p.m.-- Mr. Jaeger looks at his watch and smiles (the big clock he services runs precisely), and he says, "Right on time." And Eliot Ness and his Untouchables are always right on time to ring the death toll on crime. (synopsis by: kdh)
